"All in One" applications

Introduction

The unique "All in One" application package is the default application package for the NXS. It is part of Vacon's innovative solutions to manufacture converters of high simplicity but still of high functionality. It divides the function logic of the converter into smaller logical blocks that are easy to handle and understand.

The "All in One" application package consists of 7 ready applications that contain parameters and functions needed to use the Vacon NXS in most installations.

To use the "All in One" application package, proceed as follows:

  • decide which application to use, based on your needs for the installation
  • activate the application with the parameter S6.2
  • you now have an easy-to-use set of parameters that suits your needs
  • set the required parameters

The start-up wizard also asks which application to select at the first power-up of the converter.

Overview

The following is an overview of the "All in One" application package. For the full reference, please refer to the Vacon NXS User's Manual:

1. Basic application

The basic application is active at shipment. It contains parameters that are needed in cases where the speed reference and start/stop commands are issued from an external source, such as the control system or process controller.

Typical use:

  • simple installations with a potentiometer for speed reference and start/stop signals issued with switches
  • installations where a control system is available and issues a direct speed reference to the converter - pumps, fans, chemical dosing, etc.

2. Standard application

The Standard application incorporates the same structure as the Basic application but contains more parameters and allows more flexibility for programming of I/O signals and an automatic fault reset.

Typical use:

  • same as for the Basic application but braking of the motor with DC braking or with external brake resistor is used

3. Local/Remote control application

The Local/Remote control application allows the user to define two control sources and switch between them via a digital input. Each control source can have settings of their own, e.g. scaling of analogue signals.

Typical use:

  • installations where a local control panel and a higher level control system are used. For example, a mixer where chemicals are added manually, the converter can be controlled locally until the mix is stable and the control can be given back to the main control system.

4. Multi-step speed control application

The Multi-step speed control application is intended for applications where a high number of fixed speeds is needed. With the Multi-step control application the maximum number of fixed speeds is 15+2 pcs.

Typical use:

  • centrifuges and conveyors where the speed needs to be controlled in distinct steps
  • lifting equipment such as cranes

5. PID control application

The PID control has an integrated PID controller. The reference value can be received from an analogue signal, fieldbus or the converter keypad. The process value is normally issued from an external transducer.

Typical use:

  • PID control applications with one pump or fan. For example, the flow control or pressure control in water pipes
  • temperature control in heat exchangers

6. Multi-purpose control application

The Multi-purpose control application is the most flexible of all applications available for the NXS. It allows free programming of all I/Os and gives the user almost unlimited possibilities for the configuration of the frequency converter and makes it possible to fully utilise the modularity of the NXS.

Typical use:

  • retrofit installations where the frequency has to be adapted to the environment. Typically this could be a machine or a system where the original frequency converter is being replaced with a Vacon NXS.
  • applications where a high number of I/Os is needed

PFC Application

The PFC Application is based on the PID control application. It allows one converter to control several auxiliary pumps which are run from mains as addition to the speed controlled pump. This solution provides higher efficiency and redundancy than a system with the same capacity but with only one pump. For a full description of the system, see section "PFC Application".

Typical use:

  • pumping stations and booster stations in water supply networks
  • pumping systems in the process industry.
